Wilson Boys Fall in Sub-State Semis

Wilson DragonsSTAFFORD-Nate Heneha scored 29 points and #2 seed Hutchinson Central Christian overcame a slow start and cruised past #3 Wilson 73-53 Thursday night in the Class 1A Division ll Sub State Semifinals at Stafford Middle/High School.

The Dragons after falling behind early 3-0 ripped off 15 straight points behind hot shooting in the first quarter by Jayden Bess and Brady Mermis who combined for 14 of those points to help Wilson to a 17-6 lead after the game's first eight minutes.

A rough start to the second quarter for Wilson allowed the Cougars, the defending Sub-State Champions who won last year's tournament at Sylvan-Lucas, to get back into the contest quickly after the Dragons turned the ball over on their first three trips down the floor with two of them leading to Central Christian points.  After Wilson fell behind by two points, Bess hit his third three-point basket of the first half and eventually helped the Dragons to a 28-25 halftime lead.

However, Central Chrisitan scored the first five points of the second half and led by as many as seven points late in the third quarter before settling for a 44-39 advantage going into the final period.  After that, Heneha took over, scoring 11 points including six on back-to-back three-point plays and the Cougars punched their ticket for Saturday night's Sub-State Championship Game.

Bess, one of three Wilson seniors playing their final game along with Camden Meyer and Colin Hoeffner, made the last shot of his varsity career a memorable one when he hit a long three-pointer with 4.7 seconds left and then completed a four-point play after being fouled.  Bess fiinished the game with a team-high 23 points while Mermis added 15 for the Dragons who complete the season with a record of 12-11.

In addition to Heneha's 29 points, Deven Finlay added 18 as the Cougars (15-5) won their ninth straight game and advanced to meet top seed Mc Pherson Elyria Christian for the Sub-State title after ECS outlasted host #4 Stafford 62-51 in the latter contest Thursday night.

On Friday, the top seeded Wilson Lady Dragons will take to the floor in Sub-State Semifinal action in Stafford when they take on the #4 seeded Lady Trojans on their home floor.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on KRSL 95.9 and streamed online at krsl.com
