Russell Girls Defeat Beloit, Advance to Sub-State Championship

Russell Bronco BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team will play for a Sub-State Championship for the second year in a row as the Lady Broncos defeated Beloit 52-49 on Friday, March 2 in Minneapolis in the 3A Sub-State Semifinals.

The lead changed hands several times in the first quarter, but Beloit pulled ahead 18-13 after one period. Russell started the second stanza slow, but trailed only 29-27 at halftime. The Lady Broncos roared ahead 41-36 in the third frame behind nine points from Jaclyn Schulte. Russell's Tiffany Dortland hit seven-of-nine free throws in the final quarter to help the Lady Broncos hold on for the win.

Sam Leiker led Russell with 19 points. Dortland followed with 16 points. Schulte scored 13 points.

Beloit was led by Sydney Johnson's 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Beloit actually out-rebounded Russell 25 to 16, but 18 of those Lady Trojan boards were in the first half.

The Russell girls improve to 19-3 overall. The Beloit Lady Trojans end their season at 18-4.

The Lady Broncos will face top-seeded TMP-Marian in the 3A Sub-State Championship game in Minneapolis on Saturday, March 3 at 6 PM. The Lady Monarchs defeated Riley County 57-38 on Friday night. It will be the second year in a row for Russell and TMP to meet in the Sub-State Final. TMP won 53-36 last year in Russell and went to the State Tournament. Saturday's game will be broadcast on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
