Furious Rally Sends Wilson Girls to Sub-State Final

Wilson DragonsSTAFFORD-The top-seeded Wilson Lady Dragons overcame a 10-point first half deficit and an oustanding performance from an engergized Freshman to rally for a 50-45 victory over #4 seed Stafford on the Lady Trojans homecourt Friday evening in Class 1A Division ll Semifinal action.

The first quarter was even as Wilson led 11-10 after the first eight minutes despite eight points by Stafford Freshman Emily Green.  Green and Vanessa Weston combined for 13 points in the second quarter while the Lady Dragons were plagued by turnovers and trailed 25-15 late in the first half before going into the locker room with a 25-17 deficit.

With Stafford leading 27-18 early in the third quarter, Wilson finally got hot on back-to-back three-pointers by Kate Zelenka and Katrina Zorn whose trey marked her first points of the game and then a bucket by Kaleigh Hanzlick pulled Wilson within one at 27-26.  After the Lady Trojans answered with a basket, Zelenka knocked down another three to tie the game and then the Lady Dragons scored the next six points to complete a 17-2 surge that gave them a 35-29 lead late in the third quarter.

However, Green hit a long three at the buzzer to pull Stafford within 35-32.  After Wilson stretched the lead to 37-32 to start the fourth period, the Lady Trojans pulled to within 37-36 on Weston's bucket which was first ruled a three-pointer but changed to a two-pointer since her foot was on the line.  The Lady Dragons scored just three field goals in the fourth quarter as free throw shooting was a key with Wilson sinking nine of 10 shots from the charity stripe.

With Wilson ahead 47-40 with 40 seconds left, the game seemed well in hand but then Stafford's Darian Julian sank a three-pointer and then the Lady Trojans stole the inbounds pass with Green turning that into a layup to pull Stafford within 47-45 with 32 seconds remaining.  From there however, Wilson was able to sink three more free throws, come up with a key blocked shot and benefit from a traveling call to hang on for the win and a berth in Saturday night's Sub-State Championship game.

Wilson had three players score in double figures led by Zelenka's 12 points followed by 11 from Kendyl Zorn and 10 from Riley Dietz.  Green led all scorers with 27 ponits as the Lady Trojans finish the season with a record of 6-15.

The Lady Dragons (16-5) advance to meet Hutchinson Central Christian with a trip to the State Tournament on the line.  The Lady Cougars, the number three seed held off second-seeded Elyria Christian 37-28 in Friday's earlier contest.  Huthchinson Central Christian defeated Wilson last season in the Sub-State Final at Sylvan-Lucas.

Tip-off on Saturday in Stafford is set for 6 p.m. with coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on KRSL 95.9 and online at  The Boys final between Hutchinson Central Christian and Elyria Christian will be played 15 minutes after the Girls Final concludes.
