Lady Broncos Sweep Opener

The Russell High School softball team opened its season with a pair of victories over Plainville on Tuesday, March 27 at the Memorial Park Complex in Russell.

The Lady Broncos scored six runs in the fifth inning to overcome a one-run deficit and won the opener 11-7. In game two, Russell broke open a 9-8 game with three runs in the fourth inning, four in the fifth and three in the sixth for a 19-12 win.

Darian Klee, Brenda Neal and Taylor Powers each homered in game one to pace Russell's nine hit attack. Klee ended up with three hits and drove in two. Powers had two hits and three RBI. Abigail Cross hit a pair of home runs, drove in four and scored four runs to lead the Lady Broncos in game two. Klee homered and finished with two hits and four RBI. Baily Cable and Whitney Nuss each had two hits. Russell ended up with eight hits in game two.

Whitney Nuss (2-0) was the winning pitcher in each game.

Russell (2-0) continues a six-game season-opening homestand on Tuesday, April 3 when they host Ellsworth in their league opener. The doubleheader begins at 4pm.
