Lady Broncos Sweep Twinbill from Ellinwood

The Russell Lady Broncos Softball team celebrated Senior Recognition Day by sending off their three Seniors in style with a doubleheader sweep of Ellinwood by scores of 7-3 and 18-3 Friday afternoon at Memorial Park.

Playing on Field 1 with Field 3 their normal home field unvailable, the Lady Broncos wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in Game 1 after falling behind 1-0.  Russell grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by Taylor Powers and Kendra Bay.  Another run scored in the second frame on an RBI single by Shelby Ney.  After the Eagles tied the score with single runs in the third and fourth innings, Russell grabbed the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a two-run single by Abi Cross and an RBI triple from Whitney Nuss.  The game's final run scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.  Nuss (4-8) picked up the win with a complete game scattering six hits while striking out five.  

In Game 2, Russell jumped out in front with three first inning runs thanks to a two-run single by Bay and a passed ball on a strikeout.  The lead grew to 8-0 with five more runs in the bottom of the second with the big blow a three-run inside the park homerun by Darian Klee, her team-leading fourth of the season.  After Ellinwood plated three runs in the top of the third, the Broncos scored five runs each in the third and fourth innings to finish the sweep.  The game was called with two out in the bottom of the fourth when the 15-run mercy rule went into effect.  Bay (1-1) got the win in Game 2 whle allowing just three hits to Ellinwood batters.

Friday's doubleheader marked the final home games for the team's three Seniors, Cross, Nuss and Ally Suchy.  Cross had a banner day with six hits in the doubleheader, all singles.

Russell (5-9) has won three of its last six games.  The Lady Broncos will finish the regular season with three road doubleheaders at Beloit, Southeast of Saline and Colby before Regionals begin on May 14.
