Weekend Brings Mixed Results for Legion Teams

American LegionBoth the Russell American Legion Senior and Junior Baseball teams were in action over the weekend.

The Senior American Legion squad swept a doublehder from Norton Friday night at Shaffer Field by scores of 15-7 and 11-3 as both games were halted when the run rule kicked in.

On Sunday the team hit the road for the first time this season for a re-match of last year's Zone Tournament Championship game against Concordia.   Concordia took game one 3-2 on a walk-off hit in the seventh inning.  In Game two, Russell raced out to a nine-run lead early in the contest before a furious Concordia rally gave them a 15-13 lead in the bottom of the sixth.  Russell however rallied in the top of the seventh, tying the game on a two-run single by Cooper Pfannenstiel and then grabbing the lead three batters later on an RBI single by Tanner Rome to drive in Austin Dale.  Rome then pitched the seventh to pick up the win as Russell held on for a dramatic 16-15 victory.

Russell (4-2) is next in action Tuesday when they travel to Hays for a twinbill with TMP starting at 6 p.m.

The Junior American Legion squad competed at a tournament in Dodge City on Saturday and Sunday.  In the first of two contests on Saturday Russell played TMP to a 15-15 tie.  In their second game, Russell put up plenty of offense again but was outlasted by Valley Center 18-15.  On Sunday Russell fell in their final game of the tournament to the host team from Dodge City 11-4.

Russell (0-4-1) will play its home opener Friday at Shaffer Field when they host the Double-A squad from Hill City in a doubleheader that starts at 6 p.m.
