Russell Sr. Legion Sweeps Minneapolis

Russell Senior Legion 7-1-17Game 1: Russell 9, Minneapolis 4

Game 2: Russell 11, Minneapolis 5

The Russell American Legion Post 99 Senior Baseball team swept a pair of games from Minneapolis Wednesday evening at Shaffer Field by scores of 9-4 and 11-5.

In the opener, Minneapolis, led by former Russell High School Baseball coach Terry Moeckel when the program launched in 1993, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Russell then stormed back after that for the win powered on offense by a solo home run off the bat of Cade Evans.  Josh Foster was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Cooper Swanson.

In the nightcap it was all Russell as the bats provided plenty of offensive support for winning pitcher Walker Braun.

Russell (9-5) will play its next games Friday in Hoisington with the doubleheader scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Thursday's scheduled doubleheader at Shaffer Field against Dodge City AAA has been canceled.
