Summer Baseball Recap for Thursday, June 28

Baseball-Glove PicTwo of the three Russell Summer Baseball teams were in action on Thursday evening, while the team that didn't play still gained two victories.

Russell Senior Legion-The squad seeing its first action in nearly two weeks was swept at Dodge City Thursday evening 4-3 and 13-12.  Cade Evans and Tanner Rome pitched in the opener while Cooper Swanson pitched the nightcap.

The second game ended on a controversial call when it appeared that Russell had tied the score during its last at bat.  Swanson appeared to beat out a throw to first base which also pulled the Dodge City first basemen off the bag as the tying run crossed the plate, but Swanson was called out and the game was over.  Russell is now 10-8 on the season and their road trip continues on Saturday with a doubleheader at Colby.

Russell Junior Legion-The Russell Junior Legion team playing in just its second twinbill since June 10 following a couple of recent last minute postponements split their games with Dodge City Thursday evening at Shaffer Field.  Dodge took the opener 16-10 and Russell bounced back to win Game 2 by a score of 12-3.  The games also marked the debut of the new scoreboard recently installed at Shaffer Field which now displays pitch counts for home and visiting pitchers.  Russell is now 5-9-1 on the season and is next scheduled to play at Hoisington July 5 barring any makeup contests before then.

Russell K-18-Due to a lack of available pitchers for Phillipsburg, the Russell K-18 Baseball team was awarded a double forfeit and their games scheduled for Thursday evening at Memorial Park were not played.  In their previous doubleheader earlier this week, Phillipsburg had used nine of the 11 pitchers on their roster.  Russell is now 11-3 on the season and is next in action Monday at Wakeeny.  They will make up their postponed doubleheader from June 25 at Ellis on July 5.
