Summer Baseball Recap for Thursday, July 5

BaseballTwo of Russell's three Summer Baseball teams saw action on Thursday while the other team is preparing for the start of postseason play.

Russell Senior Legion-The Russell American Legion Post 99 Senior Baseball team played its first game at the Wild West Fest Tournament in Hays Thursday evening and defeated the Hays Single-A squad 4-3.  Brooks Nichols got the win for Russell, which took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before Hays scored three runs to tighten things up.  Tanner Rome then relieved Nichols and slammed the door on Hays for the save.  Offensively, Kyle Farmer had two hits and drove in one run while Rome collected an important two-run single that proved to be the difference in the game.

Russell (13-8), continues play Friday at Wild West Fest with a Noon game against Norton at Hays High School  Russell swept Norton earlier in the season at home.

Russell K-18-The Russell K-18 Baseball team finished its regular season falling to Ellis in a doubleheader sweep by scores of 13-1 and 11-7.  Russell ends the regular season on a four-game losing streak with a record of 11-7 and will now begin preparations for the West Regional next week in Colby.  Head Coach Jason Drake tells KRSL that Russell's first game date and opponent should be announced within the next few days.

Russell Junior Legion-The Russell American Legion Post 99 Junior Baseball team's regular season is over after their final contest at Hoisington scheduled for Thursday was canceled. The Junior Legion finishes the regular season with a record of 5-9-1.   They will next compete in the Zone Tournament which orginially was scheduled for Friday through Sunday but for unknown reasons was pushed back to begin on Monday.  A schedule for this tournament has yet to be released.
