Russell Falls in Opener at AA State Tournament

American LegionSABETHA - The Russell Post 99 Senior American Legion Baseball team lost their opening game of pool play at the AA State Tournament to Silver Lake 13-1 Wednesday evening at Somerset Park.

Silver Lake jumped on starting and losing pitcher Brooks Nichols for three first innning runs on a two-run single by Justin Keller and a throwing error.  The Silver Lake lead swelled to 6-0 with three more runs in the second inning off reliever Cade Evans on an error, a sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Keller.

Russell pushed across its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second when Cooper Pfannenstiel his a ground ball to second base.  Silver Lake second baseman Cody Hay dove to stop Pfannenstiel's grounder from going into center field but Austin Dale was running on contact and scored from second base with two out.

Silver Lake put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning on back to back bases loaded walks, a two-run double by Reid Walker, a two-run single by Trent Byers and yet another RBI single by Keller who went four for four and drove in four runs.  The game ended after four innings due to the run rule.

Russell is next in action on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. when they play Iola in a must-win game. The game will be broadcast on KRSL 95.9 and streamed on KRSL.com.
