Victoria Wins Opener Over Otis-Bison

Victoria High SchoolVICTORIA-Cooper Windholz scored two touchdowns and the Victoria defense forced three fourth quarter turnovers as the Knights defeated Otis-Bison in the 2018 season opener Friday evening 28-14.

The Knights won the toss and took their opening possession 55 yards in five plays before Windholz scored his first touchdown on a one-yard run.  The two-point conversion was good and Victoria (#2 in Eight-Man Division l) led 8-0.  After stopping Otis-Bison (#4 in Eight-Man Division ll) on their first drive, the Knights moved 67 yards in nine plays and scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Windholz to Drayden Karlin, but the two-point play was no good and Victoria's lead was 14-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Windholz finished an eight-play, 64-yard drive with another one-yard run and the two-point try was good for a 22-0 advantage.  The Cougars got on the board with 1:02 left in the first half on a 39-yard scamper by Quarterback Anton Foust but the two-point conversion failed and Victoria took a 22-6 lead into intermission.

Foust did not play in the second half due to apparent heat exhaustion in the hot and humid conditions.  He was replaced at Quarterback by Seth Hoopingarner who scored on a 42-yard run on Otis-Bison's first possession of the second half to pull the Cougars within 22-14 after the two-point conversion.  Victoria however responded with a four play, 43-yard drive which was capped off by a one-yard run by Tyler Knoles to make the score 28-14 after three quarters after the Knights missed the two-point play.

The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle but the Knights' defense proved to be stronger.  Victoria picked off three Hoopingarner passes during the quarter.  Two of those interceptions were made by Layton Riedel while Jacob Wellbrock made the other interception off a deflection preserving the Knights' second consecutive season-opening win and avenging a two-point loss last season in Otis.

Knoles was the leading rusher for Victoria with 66 yards while Windholz finished the game with 55 yards on the ground along with his two touchdowns.  Foust led Otis-Bison with 85 yards on seven carries.

Victoria (1-0) will travel to Claflin next Friday to face Central Plains.  The Knights defeated the Oilers in the season opener last year 34-8.
