Russell Opens with Win Over Ellsworth

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team opened the 2018 season in Great Bend on Friday, August 31 with a 24-13 win over the Ellsworth Bearcats.

The game was played in Great Bend due to precautions regarding the City of Russell's electricity issues Thursday.

Ellsworth (0-1) scored first at the 4:50 mark in the first quarter on a two yard touchdown run by quarterback Morgan Kelley. The two-point conversion try was no good. Russell (1-0) answered with 54 seconds left in the opening period with a five yard TD run by running back Rhett Pospichal to cap off a nine-play, 80-yard drive. The extra point try was no good. The score was tied 6-6 after one frame.

Russell extended its lead at the 8:01 mark in the second quarter with an 11 yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive end Travis Tammen. The extra point try was no good and the Broncos led 12-6 at the half.

The Bearcats roared back to take the lead at the 5:43 mark in the third quarter when Kelley ran seven yards for another touchdown. The extra point attempt was good, giving Ellsworth a 13-12 lead. However, the Bearcats would not score again. Russell reclaimed the lead at the 2:43 mark in the third when quarterback Jacob Sohm hooked up with wide receiver Braydon Gibson for an 11 yard receiving TD. The extra point try was no good, making the score 18-13, Russell. Then, with 32 seconds to go in the third period, Bronco linebacker AJ Oste recovered a fumble and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was no good. Russell led 24-13 after three quarters.

Neither team scored in the final quarter and the Broncos won.

The Broncos totaled 100 yards on the ground and 151 yards through the air. Running back Glen Law rushed for 31 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Austin Price threw for 93 yards on six completions. Wide receiver Kyler Fritschen caught four passes for 68 yards.

Ellsworth totaled 107 yards on the ground and 58 yards through the air. Kelley accounted for 93 of those rushing yards.

Russell committed two interceptions and one fumble. Ellsworth lost two interceptions and two fumbles.
