Russell Dominates LaCrosse

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team scored a dominating 50-12 win over the LaCrosse Leopards on Friday, September 7 at Shaffer Field in Russell.

Russell (2-0) scored early at the 10:43 mark in the first quarter when quarterback Austin Price scampered 50 yards for a touchdown. Price passed to wide receiver AJ Oste for a 33 yard TD with eight seconds left in the first period and the Broncos led 16-0 after one.

LaCrosse (1-1) scored its first touchdown of the game at the 7:52 mark in the second frame on a five yard run by running back Colby Stull. The Broncos answered with 5:18 to go in the first half, scoring a touchdown on a 17 yard pass from Price to wide receiver Travis Tammen, capping off a 10 play, 55 yard drive. Leopard quarterback Hunter Morgan ran in a one yard touchdown with only two seconds left in the second quarter and it looked like LaCrosse would head to the half trailing by 10 points. However, Russell's AJ Oste proceeded to run back the ensuing kickoff for a 74 yard TD return. The Broncos took a 30-12 advantage into the locker room at the break.

In the third quarter, Russell's Price and Oste hooked up for a 77 yard touchdown pass and catch at the 3:18 mark. Russell's second quarterback Jacob Sohm passed 13 yards to wide receiver Rhett Pospichal for a TD with only 20 seconds to go in the third. The pass finished an eight play, 65 yard drive. The Broncos led 44-12 heading into the final stanza.

The final Russell touchdown of the game came with 1:33 left when Sohm found Pospichal for a 43 yard pass to end a 15 play, 80 yard drive. LaCrosse did not score in the second half and Russell cruised to victory.

Russell scored touchdowns on seven of its 10 drives and was four-for-five on two-point conversions, but zero-for-two on extra-point kicks.

The Broncos totaled 131 yards on the ground and 256 yards through the air. Price rushed for 79 yards on six carries. Price threw for 142 yards on four completions. Sohm passed for 114 yards on seven completions. Oste caught three passes for 117 yards.

LaCrosse totaled 146 yards on the ground and 87 yards through the air. Stull rushed for 73 yards on 19 carries.

LaCrosse's Morgan threw two interceptions. Russell did not turn the ball over.
