Russell Main Street, Inc.'s annual Christmas festival Weihnachtsfest is Saturday, December 11 from 11 AM to 2 PM in downtown Russell.

The theme is Christmas in the Country.

Weihnachtsfest is an over 25 year tradition to downtown Russell. During Weihnachtsfest, the community is invited downtown to enjoy the famous Santa giveaway, extended store hours, retail Christmas promotion, festival of green cheer, carriage rides, Santa's workshop, food vendors, craft vendors, festivities in the park, warming station at 8th and Main, vendors in the big tent, pictures with Santa, Christmas music, crafts at the Russell Public Library and more to come.

"Weihnachtsfest is a way to get everyone downtown to support our local businesses, promote our downtown and build community pride," Krista Whitmer, RMSI Executive Director, said.

The retail Christmas promotion began November 21. Punch cards can be found in participating businesses. Shop participating businesses and receive a punch for every $10 spent. After all punches are fulfilled, the card can be entered into a drawing for $800 in Main Street Bucks. Locations will be printed on the backside of each promotion card.

The Santa giveaway will take place on December 11 at 1:30 PM in the warming station at 8th and Main. The giveaway consists of a specially handcrafted Santa Claus by Loretta Miller. The Santa Claus will be displayed in the showcase at the corner of Main and 7th Street.

Weihnachtsfest buttons will be sold until December 11 for the Santa giveaway. The buttons are hand drawn by Ruppenthal Middle School students, an over 15 year tradition. The buttons can be purchased at the RMSI office or in participating businesses.

Weihnachtsfest buttons can also be used during the carriage rides December 11 for a free carriage ride. All other rides will be $2 per ride.

"One of the greatest gifts of Christmas is the gift of giving. RMSI offers this experience to children with Santa's workshop," Whitmer said. Santa's workshop will take place on December 11 at the Myers North Building, also known as the Banker's Building. The workshop is for children to shop for their loved ones. Discounted items will be available for purchase with free gift wrapping.

"The Main Street Christmas celebration offers so much to our community. Come downtown on the 11th and check out the food vendors, shop local, get pictures with Santa, take the family on a carriage ride and get into the Christmas spirit. Everyone is invited to this event," Whitmer said.

Continuing this year, Russell's festival of green cheer will take place. Over 25 businesses will decorate a wreath or a swag, which will then be on display for silent auction in each business. On December 11, all the items will be on display for final bidding in the big tent at 8th and Main. Bidding will end at 1:30 PM with the highest bid winning each item. The business with the highest bid will receive $25 off their 2022-2023 Russell Main Street, Inc. membership.
