Weihnachtsfest is Dec. 12 in Downtown Russell
Weihnachtsfest is an over 25 year tradition to Downtown Russell.
During Weihnachtsfest, the community is invited downtown to enjoy the famous Santa Giveaway, extended store hours, Retail Christmas Promotion, Festival of Green Cheer, carriage rides, Santa’s Workshop, food vendors, craft vendors, s’mores in the park, warming station at 8th and Main, vendors in the big tent, pictures with Santa, Christmas music, new this year a Christmas Brass Quintet at the Dream Theater at 2 PM and more to come.
“Weihnachtsfest is a way to get everyone downtown to support our local businesses, promote our downtown and build community pride,” said Krista Whitmer, RMSI Executive Director.
The retail Christmas Promotion will begin on November 16. Punch cards can be found in participating businesses. Shop participating businesses and receive a punch for every $10 spent. After all punches are fulfilled, the card can be entered into a drawing for $800 in Main Street Bucks. Locations to be determined.
The Santa Giveaway will take place on December 12 at 1:30 PM in the warming station at 8th and Main. The giveaway consists of a specially handcrafted Santa Claus by Loretta Miller. The Santa Claus will be displayed in the showcase at the corner of Main and 7th Street. For 6 years, Dustin Poche has worked in collaboration with Miller to create the one-of-a-kind Santa Claus used for the raffle drawing. This year, a portion of the button sales will be donated to the Dustin Poche Medical Fund for assistance in his battle with cancer. Weihnachtsfest buttons will be sold until December 12 for the Santa Giveaway. The buttons are hand drawn by Ruppenthal Middle School students, an over 15 year tradition. The buttons can be purchased at the RMSI office or in participating businesses (to be announced).
Weihnachtsfest buttons can also be used during the Carriage Rides December 12 for a free carriage ride. All other rides will be two dollars per ride.
“One of the greatest gifts of Christmas is the gift of giving, RMSI offers this experience to children with Santa’s Workshop,” Whitmer said. Santa’s Workshop will take place on and December 12, location to be determined. The workshop is for children to shop for their loved ones. Discounted items will be available for purchase with free gift wrapping.
“The Main Street Christmas celebration offers so much to our community. Come downtown on the 12th and check out the food vendors, shop local, get pictures with Santa, take the family on a carriage ride and get into the Christmas spirit. Everyone is invited to this event”, Whitmer said.
