Press Release from Assistant Fire Chief Jordan Harrison:

On October 27 at approximately 11:29 AM the City of Russell Fire Department was dispatched to a garage fire at 711 East 5th Street. The 911 caller reported that the building was fully engulfed with fire. An on-duty Russell Police Officer had arrived on scene and advised that the attached garage was fully engulfed, and the fire was starting to spread to the attic of the residence.

Upon arrival of the first City of Russell Fire Department personnel, mutual-aid was requested from Russell-Grant Township Fire Department and Gorham Fire Department. The fire was brought under control around 1:10 PM, but firefighters were on-scene until 4:15 PM performing salvage and overhaul operations. Firefighters were hampered in fire attack by the type of construction of the house and garage.

The cause of the fire has been ruled undetermined and the residence is a total loss.

Firefighters were also assisted by Russell County EMS, the Russell Police Department, Kansas Gas Service, the City of Russell Electric and Water Departments, and Russell Rotary Rescue.
