Natoma and the surrounding area along the Paradise Creek suffered major flooding Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service and local reports, areas of Rooks County west of Natoma received four to more than eight inches of rainfall overnight Saturday and early Sunday morning.

The Paradise Creek, which flows from Rooks County through the south side of Natoma, came out of its banks early Sunday morning.

All residents south of North 2nd Street, which is the main commercial street through town, were evacuated.

Rural firefighters, first responders, Osborne County EMS, local residents and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism used boats and loader tractors for resident rescues.

Citizens on scene said it's the worst flood they've seen in Natoma since 1993.

Flooding was also reported in the city of Paradise a few hours later Sunday.

Because of the flooding in and around Natoma, USD 399 will not have school on Monday, May 17.
