Prairiesta Promenade Ushers in Kangaroo Court

The Prairiesta shenanigans have officially begun as a kangaroo court was declared at the second Prairiesta Promenade on Thursday, May 13 in downtown Russell.

A sheriff and deputies swore at each other and were sworn in at a very unofficial ceremony Thursday evening at 8th and Main next to the red and blue Prairiesta Jail.

We say unofficial ceremony because the sheriff, Brandon Nuss, and his deputies could barely say their oaths of office without messing up and saying something else entirely different.

Regardless, the ceremony was officiated by His Royal Majesty, The Right Honorable Judge of the Kangaroo Court Chasen Katz, an actual Russell attorney, and actual Russell County Sheriff Fred Whitman.

The allegedly appointed sheriff and deputies were given the right and duty to issue subpoenas for various reasons, including, but not limited to, no brothers button, no smoothie button, no belle pin, no official hat, no official bonnet, just because, habitual violator, having too much fun, not having any fun or other.

Of course, this is all in good Prairiesta fun and none of these subpoenas, arrests or charges are real, but you still may have to do some time in the Prairiesta Jail, again, all in good fun.

Connie Blanke with the Prairiesta Committee explains.

And speaking of the Prairiesta Jail, it was discovered stolen and moved to the front lawn of Russell High School Friday morning. The sheriff and deputies have already got work to do.

Also during Thursday's Promenade, a newly planted tree was dedicated in front of the Russell Public Library.

The next Prairiesta Promenade will be held on Thursday, May 20.
