Russell Play Park Committee Shares Exciting Fundraising Update

As Russell gears up for the Third Annual Lemonade Stand Challenge, the Russell Play Park Committee wants to share an exciting update.

Over 20 years ago, the Russell community came together to build a beautiful castle park playground in Memorial Park. Many hours have been spent there by area children, but now, the playground is nearing the end of its lifespan. Sadly, many of the trees surrounding the park caused damage to the park equipment during a recent storm. The park is fenced off while City of Russell crews clean up the debris.

The Russell Play Park Committee is on a mission to raise funds to build a fully accessible playground in its place. This new playground will feature ramps for access to upper levels of the main play structure, a wheelchair-accessible merry-go-round and glider, sensory equipment and a surface material that ensures ease of movement for everyone, including those in wheelchairs and with mobility challenges.

The cost to make this dream a reality for Russell and surrounding communities is $1.5 million.

Fundraising efforts are in full swing and they've already raised over $130,000. Plus, they have a memorandum of understanding in place with the City of Russell contributing $300,000 toward the Russell Play Park.

The plan includes grants, business sponsorships, private donations and events like the Lemonade Stand Challenge to make this dream a reality.

This fall, they will have the opportunity to apply for a grant, which requires a 50 percent match. With this in mind, the committee set an aggressive summer fundraising goal of $100,000.
