Much of the state knows longtime Sylvan-Lucas Unified English teacher Linda Haring as the veteran coach of the Mustangs’ volleyball and softball teams, but did you know her work in speech and drama has produced one of the most successful programs in Kansas over her three decade tenure?

Haring has guided Sylvan-Lucas to 10 top-three team finishes at the Kansas State High School Activities Association State Speech & Drama Championships, including state titles in Class 1A in 2018 and 2023. The Mustangs added another third-place finish in Class 1A recently after finishing third as a team in 2A in 2025 with another third place finish in 1A in 2024, continuing a consistent presence as one of the state’s top programs.

She has led the SLUHS volleyball team to multiple sub-state championships and a third-place finish in Class 1A-Division I at the 2017 state tournament, while also compiling nearly 300 wins on the softball diamond with a fourth place finish at 2-1A state in 2007.
