Billy Frank Smith passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021 at Russell Regional Hospital with his mother, Cathlene McClain and his longtime friend Wade Boettcher by his side.

Billy was born in Amarillo, Texas, January 30, 1977 and lived there until the family moved to Russell, Kansas to be close to his grandparents.   He lived most of his life in Russell, graduating from Russell High School in 1995.  He was always an avid hunter and fisherman, getting up early mornings through high school, taking off in his Chevy Luv pickup to go bow hunting before classes began.

He joined the scouting organization as a Cub Scout and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He learned how to live off the land through scouting and put it to use throughout his life.  He learned how to hang deer for processing the meat for sharing over a campfire with family and friends. He was always willing to teach his friends the skills he had learned through his life.

In his adult life he became a truck driver hauling heavy equipment for road construction, grain to and from elevators, or long haul delivering supplies across the United States.  He also liked kareoki and had the equipment to provide the songs wherever he was. He enjoyed seeing the country and meeting people all along the way and had hoped to do some traveling in his motorhome before his health would not let him.

He is survived by his mother, Cathlene McClain, and brothers Jesse D Smith, Gary McClain (Diana), David McClain (Lorraine) and sister Mary McClain, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father Wilbur Roy Smith, step father Dwane McClain, grandparents Corbett and Frankie Gooch, William and Catherine Smith.

Graveside services will be held Friday, June 18, 2021 at 10 AM at Grand Center Cemetery, Waldo, Kansas, with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating.
