Girls Tennis players from Russell and Victoria opened play at the KSHSAA Class 3-2-1A Regional Friday at Trego Community High School in WaKeeney.

Russell and Victoria competed throughout the regular season as a co-op but now are now competing separately in the postseason.

The Lady Broncos' representatives are the doubles tandem of Hailey Gier and Anna-Marie Marsell who received a bye into the second round where they defeated Heather Ward and Kassie Lisner of Hoisington, 6-2, 6-3 to move into the Quarterfinals.  It was in that round where the Russell duo fell to Elana Jundt and Felis De La Cruz of Ellsworth 6-1, 6-1.  As a result Gier and Marsell are still alive for a chance at a top six finish which would qualify them for the state tournament.  They will face Annabelle Schneider and Mia Reynolds of Greeley County in their first match on Saturday and a win would qualify them for state.

Victoria was represented in the doubles tournament by Jameson Toon and Rachel Kuhn, who won their first round match over Azariah Christy and Lydia Walker of Phillipsburg before losing their second match to Grace Sturtz and Mahra Johnston of Ellinwood 6-1, 6-3, ending their tournament run.

Aurora and Piper Nowlin are competing in the singles tournament for Victoria.  After receiving a first round bye, Piper Nowlin was defeated by Valorie Solida of Phillipsburg 6-3, 6-4.  Aurora Nowlin still has a shot at qualifying for the state tournament after her Friday matches.  After receiving a first round bye, Nowlin downed Zoey Shivers of Greeley County 6-0, 6-1 to advance into the quarterfinals where she was bested by Lauren Sleder of Larned, 6-1, 6-3.   Nowlin will play on Saturday against Solida who ousted Piper Nowlin earlier Friday for a chance at a top six qualifying spot for state.
