Beloit Defeats Russell in District Opener

The Russell High School football team opened district play with a 38-22 loss to Beloit at home at Shaffer Field in Russell on Friday, September 23.

Beloit (2-2 overall, 1-2 North Central Activities Association, 1-0 Class 2A District 8) senior running back Logan Arasmith rushed 56 yards for a touchdown at the 10:04 mark in the first quarter. The two-point conversion was no good. With 6:48 remaining in the first period, Trojan senior running back Benson Berndt scored a one-yard TD run. The two-point conversion was no good. Just 12 seconds later, Russell (2-2 overall, 2-1 Mid-Continent League, 0-1 Class 2A District 8) got on the scoreboard with a 76-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by junior Peyton Pfannenstiel. The extra-point kick was no good and Beloit led 12-6 after the first frame.

At the 8:57 mark in the second quarter, Bronco senior quarterback Wyatt Middleton connected with senior wide receiver Jace Peerman for a 40-yard touchdown pass to complete a nine-play, 59-yard drive. Senior kicker Charlie Krug's PAT was good and Russell took a 13-12 lead. However, Beloit's Arasmith rushed 47 yards for another TD with 6:05 remaining in the first half and the Trojans reclaimed the lead. The two-point conversion was no good and Beloit led 18-13 at the break.

Beloit junior quarterback Quinn Eilert rushed for a one-yard touchdown at the 5:34 mark in the third stanza. The two-point conversion was no good. At the 5:19 mark in the third quarter, Russell's Middleton found Peerman again for another touchdown, this time from 63 yards out. The two-point conversion was no good and the Trojans led 24-19 heading to the fourth period.

At the 9:11 mark in the final stanza, Beloit's Berndt scored a one-yard TD run. The two-point conversion was no good. Arasmith rushed 40 yards for another Trojan touchdown with just 1:37 remaining in the contest. The two-point conversion was good. And with just 25 seconds remaining in the game, Russell's Krug kicked a 30-yard field goal, but Beloit prevailed, winning 38-22.

Beloit outgained Russell 561 total yards to 234 yards. The Trojans rushed for 488 yards and passed for 73 yards. The Broncos rushed for 63 yards and passed for 171 yards.

Middleton completed 12 passes for all 171 yards and two scores for Russell. Middleton also rushed for 66 yards on eight carries. Peerman finished with two catches for 103 yards and two scores. Senior wide receiver Jackson Cross caught four passes for 47 yards.

Arasmith finished with a staggering 334 yards rushing on 22 carries and three scores for Beloit. Berndt totaled 159 yards rushing on 28 carries and two scores.

The Bronco defense did force a blocked punt and a fumble recovery by junior defensive end Roman Hernandez on that blocked punt.
