HOISINGTON-The 2024 Russell-Victoria Bronco Baseball season came to end Friday evening with a 12-2 loss to Hoisington-Central Plains in the first round of the Class 3A Regional at Logan Field.

The contest was scoreless for the first two and a half innings as Russell-Victoria's Max Evans (1-4) matched zeroes with Cardinal starter Tony Moore. Evans retired the first seven batters he faced until a one-out walk in the bottom of the third.  Hoisington-Central Plains took a 3-0 lead in that frame on an RBI groundout, an RBI single and an error.

The fifth-seeded Broncos responded immediately in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of runs thanks to an RBI single by Matt Pfeifer and a Cardinal error that allowed Evans to score.  Russell-Victoria had a chance to tie the game on a wild pitch by Moore, but #4 seed Hoisington-Central Plains catcher Marcus Ingram played the ball perfectly off the backstop and fired to Moore who tagged out Pfeifer as he tried to score.

An RBI groundout extended the Cardinal lead to 4-2 after four innings and Moore followed up by retiring the Broncos in order in the top of the fifth. From there, things got away from the Broncos and they met a sudden end to their season when the Redbirds scored eight runs off relief pitcher Wyatt Griffin in the bottom of the fifth which enforced the run rule that ended the game.

Each team committed four errors in the contest and Moore wound up picking up a complete game win for Hoisington-Central Plains (12-9).  Friday's loss was the seventh in a row to end the season for Russell-Victoria (8-12).

The Cardinals with the victory will meet Holcomb in the first regional semifinal at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14 at the Shaffer Sports Complex in Russell. Holcomb, the regional's top seed edged out #8 seed Goodland 1-0 in a rematch of last year's regional championship game.  The other two first round contests on Friday saw #2 seed Colby blank #7 seed Southwestern Heights 7-3 while #3 seed Cimarron-Ingalls took care of #6 seed Lakin 8-2.  Colby and Cimarron-Ingalls will square off in the second semifinal on Tuesday at around 4:30 p.m.   The championship game at the Shaffer Sports Complex will be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the winner and regional champion moving on to the Class 3A State Tournament at Kansas State University in Manhattan on May 23 and 24.

Friday's game was the last in a Bronco uniform for Russell-Victoria's lone senior, Will Scherrer.
