Broncos Roll in First Round of Regional, Back to Goodland Tuesday
GOODLAND-The Russell-Victoria baseball team rolled by Cimarron-Ingalls 9-1 in the first round of the Goodland 3A Regional Tournament on Monday, May 15 at Centennial Park.
After Cimarron-Ingalls plated a run in the top of the first inning, the Broncos responded by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the frame aided by two Blue Jay errors. Russell-Victoria took a 2-1 lead when Jackson Cross bounced into a fielder's choice but Cimarron-Ingalls pitcher Breck Averhoff, trying for a foreceout at home plate threw wide of the plate, allowing two runs to score. Max Evans drove in the next two runs with a single, the first of his three hits on the afternoon.
The Broncos then extended the advantage to 6-1 with single runs in the second and third innings on an RBI single by Cross and another fielder's choice respectively. The Broncos scored twice more in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Charlie Krug and a double-steal to swell the lead to 8-1 and closed out the scoring on another RBI single by Evans in the bottom of the sixth.
Wyatt Griffin picked up the win and was one of four Bronco pitchers to limit the Blue Jays to four hits joined by Evans, Cameron Farmer and Cale Braun. The main reason for the frequent pitching changes was managing pitch counts for Bronco hurlers with one and potentially two games ahead on Tuesday., May 16.
Monday's victory was the first in the postseason for the Broncos since a win over Smoky Valley in the Class 3A Hoisington Regional in 2018.
Russell-Victoria improves to 20-1 on the season and advances to the semifinals on Tuesday, May 16 at 2 p.m. (Central Time) in Goodland. The Broncos play Holcomb which edged Colby 5-4 in eight innings later Monday afternoon. Should the Broncos get by the Longhorns they would face either Scott City which clobbered Southwestern Heights in their opening game Monday evening 15-0 or Goodland which downed Lakin late Monday 10-1 for the Regional championship on Tuesday evening.
