Central Plains and LaCrosse Split CPL Battle

LACROSSE-Marilyn Soeken scored 21 points as Central Plains rallied from a seven-point first half deficit then hung on to defeat LaCrosse 40-35 in Central Prairie League action Friday night at LaCrosse Middle and High School.
LaCrosse led 11-9 after the game's first eight minutes and then widened their lead to 16-9 in the second quarter before Central Plains cut their deficit to 18-14 at halftime. The Lady Oilers then charged into the lead in the third quarter with a 9-0 run to go ahead 23-18 and led 28-26 heading to the fourth quarter.
Avery Parrott tied the score at 28-28 with a jumper but moments later, Soeken's three-point play gave Central Plains the lead back for good and the Lady Oilers sank four key free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Joining Soeken in double figures for Central Plains (12-4, 6-1 CPL) was Addyson Ogle who had 11 points. Madison Morgan led LaCrosse (10-6, 5-3 CPL) with 14 points.
The Boys game featured a top 10 matchup in Class 1A Division l as #5 LaCrosse faced off with #9 Central Plains. LaCrosse also opened the night at the top of the St. John-Hudson Sub-State standings just one game ahead of the Oilers.
Central Plains led for a good portion of the first half, but the Leopards defense forced the Oilers into numerous second half turnovers on their way to a 45-29 victory.
Central Plains scored the game's first four points and led 9-7 after the first quarter. The two teams took turns with the lead in the second period but with Central Plains ahead 15-14, the Leopards proceeded to close the half on a 7-2 surge to lead 21-17 at the break. LaCrosse then ripped off 12 straight points to start the third quarter to swell the lead to 33-17 and settle for a 35-21 advantage heading to the final period. LaCrosse led by as many as 18 points before Central Plains pulled to within 12 during the fourth quarter but the turnovers were too much to overcome as the Leopards cruised to the win.
Gage Burk led LaCrosse (14-2, 8-0 CPL) with 14 points while Logan Skillett chipped in with 11 points. Brodie Crites was the scoring leader for Central Plains (12-4, 6-1 CPL) with eight points. Peyton Ryan, the Oilers' leading scorer averaging slightly under 16 points a game coming into Friday's contest was held to just five points.
Central Plains will next be in action on Tuesday, February 13 when they welcome Ness City to Claflin while LaCrosse will step outside the Central Prairie League for a road trip to Pawnee Heights.
