The Russell High School girls basketball team closed out the regular season on Tuesday, February 23 with a 58-34 loss to Ellis at Amos Morris Gym in Russell on Senior Night.

The Lady Broncos led 12-8 after the first quarter and 22-21 at halftime. However, the Lady Railroaders outscored Russell 20 to 4 in the third period and led 41-26 heading into the fourth frame. Ellis never looked back and cruised to the win.

Aniya Stierlen led Russell with 10 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Emerson Nichols followed with nine points.

Grace Eck paced Ellis with 22 points. Emily Eck scored 13 points. Abigail North finished with 10 points.

Russell committed 18 turnovers, while Ellis only turned the ball over six times.

The Lady Broncos did outrebound Ellis 35 to 27.

The Russell girls fall to 9-11 overall and 4-7 in the Mid-Continent League.

The Russell boys also lost to Ellis, 60-49.

The Broncos jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one period and led 29-24 at the break. However, the Railroaders outscored Russell 19 to 9 in the third stanza and led 43-38 after three quarters. Ellis hit free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win.

Briar Ulrich paced Russell with 17 points. Eight Broncos scored. Josh Sohm and Jordayn Buhrle each collected nine rebounds.

Brady Frickey led the Railers with 18 points. Daniel Eck followed with 17 points. Tyson Jimenez and Sam Honas each scored 11 points.

Russell committed 16 turnovers, while Ellis only turned the ball over six times.

The Broncos outrebounded Ellis 34 to 25 and eight to six on the offensive glass, getting eight points off of those eight offensive boards.

The Russell boys fall to 6-14 overall and 2-9 in the MCL.

The Russell girls and boys begin postseason play on March 1 and 2 in Sub-State. The girls will play Monday at 7 PM on the road at TMP-Marian in Hays. The boys will play Tuesday at 7 PM on the road at Minneapolis. Catch both games on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
