Five Broncos, One Relay Team Take Gold at Russell Relays

The Russell High School track and field team hosted its annual Russell Relays on Friday, May 6 at Shaffer Field in Russell.

Five schools competed in the meet - Russell, Hoisington, Plainville, Spearville and TMP-Marian.

The Russell boys finished third with 94 points, while the girls were fourth with 42 points. Hoisington ran off with the boys team title with 225 points. TMP-Marian took the girls team title with 197.5 points.

Brayden Strobel and Jace Peerman had big days to lead the RHS boys. Strobel won the high jump and placed third in both the triple jump and pole vault. Peerman won the long jump, took second in the high jump and was fifth in the 100 M hurdles. Jacob Ney won the 400 M dash and finished fifth in the 200 M dash. Jesse Whitmer won the 100 M dash. Peyton Pfannenstiel was fourth in the 200 M dash and fifth in the 100 M dash. Tyler Lampert finished sixth in the 800 M run. The 4x100 relay team (Strobel, Pfannenstiel, Ney, Whitmer) placed first.

For the Russell girls, Kelvie Reeves took gold in the 400 M dash and placed sixth in the 100 M dash. Aubrey Birney finished fourth in the high jump and was sixth in both the long jump and triple jump. Jaden Ney took third in the pole vault. Abby Strobel earned a third-place finish in the shot put. Taylor Birney was fifth in the long jump. The 4x400 relay team (Ney, Camille Dortland, A. Birney, Reeves) placed second.

Russell competes in the Mid-Continent League meet in Smith Center on Thursday, May 12. Events begin at 3 PM.
