Hoxie Sweeps Russell

The Russell High School girls basketball team lost 47-33 to Hoxie on Thursday, February 18 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The game was tied 11-11 after one quarter and the Lady Broncos pulled ahead 20-17 at halftime. However, the Lady Indians claimed the lead in the third period and led 30-27 after three quarters. Hoxie only allowed one Russell field goal and four made free throws in the final stanza and pulled away for the win.

Rylan Reeves led Russell with 12 points. Emerson Nichols scored nine points. Aniya Stierlen had four blocks.

Josey Kennedy and Paiton Rogers each scored 14 points for Hoxie. Hayley Jacobs also finished with 10 points.

Russell committed 23 turnovers while Hoxie turned the ball over 17 times.

The Lady Indians outrebounded Russell 22 to 21 and seven to five on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls fall to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in the Mid-Continent League.

In the boys contest, Hoxie got the 74-49 victory.

The undefeated Indians led 17-13 after one period and 37-26 at the break. Hoxie pulled away in the third quarter and led 58-39 heading into the fourth frame. The Indians pulled away even farther in the final quarter and the last couple minutes were played with a running clock.

Briar Ulrich led Russell with 14 points. Jace Peerman scored a career-high 11 points.

Brady Jones paced Hoxie with 20 points. Harlan Obioha followed with 18 points. Caden White scored 11 points. Ashton Dowell finished with 10 points.

Russell outrebounded Hoxie 22 to 20 and eight to seven on the offensive boards.

The Russell boys fall to 6-11 and 2-7 in the MCL.
