Russell Boys Dominate Smith Center in MCL Tournament Matchup

The Russell High School boys basketball team defeated Smith Center 67-45 at Plainville's Cardinal Gym on Monday, January 18 in a Mid-Continent League Tournament consolation game.

The Broncos jumped out to a 25-4 lead after the first quarter. The Redmen had a better second period, but Russell still led 45-26 at halftime. RHS pulled away again in the third quarter, led 59-33 heading into the final frame and cruised to the 67-45 win.

Braydon Gibson paced Russell with a season-high 16 points. Jordayn Buhrle followed with 15 points. In all, 10 Broncos scored.

Griffin Kugler led the Redmen with 16 points. Wyatt Overmiller scored 14 points.

Russell only committed 10 turnovers, while Smith Center turned the ball over 21 times.

The Broncos outrebounded the Redmen 36 to 19 and 15 to 6 on the offensive glass. In all, 11 Broncos had at least one board.

The Russell boys improve to 5-5 overall.

Next, the Broncos will play Stockton for ninth place in the MCL Tournament. The Tigers defeated Plainville 53-48 on Monday in Plainville. The ninth place game will be played Thursday, January 21 at approximately 7:30 PM at the Stockton Grade School Gym. The game will be broadcast on KRSL Russell Radio and KRSL.com.
