Russell Girls Fall in MCL Tournament Third Place Game

The Russell High School girls basketball team lost 51-34 to Smith Center in the third place game of the Mid-Continent League tournament in Plainville on Saturday, January 22.

Smith Center led 8-1 after the first quarter and 20-7 at the half. The Lady Broncos only made two field goals in the first half. Russell hit four three-point baskets in the third quarter and roared back to trail 24-23 early in the third period, but the Lady Red regained the momentum and extended their advantage back to 35-23 heading into the fourth period. Smith Center pulled away in the final frame and claimed third place with the 51-34 win.

Camille Dortland led Russell with 12 points. Rylan Reeves followed with nine points.

Maile Hrabe paced Smith Center with 17 points. Tallon Rentschler scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Red outrebounded Russell 30 to 17 and nine to five on the offensive boards.

Russell committed 23 turnovers and forced 17 Smith Center turnovers.

The Russell girls fall to 6-6 overall and remain 2-2 in the MCL.
