Russell Scores Key District Win Over Colby

The Russell High School football team hosted Colby for Hometown Heroes Night on Friday, October 8 and defeated the Eagles by a 28-14 score.

It was the first win for Russell over Colby since 1979 and the third win for Russell at Shaffer Field this season.

Russell (4-2, 2-1 Class 3A District 6) quarterback Andrew Roth finished a six-play, 71-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run for the first score of the game with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter. Charlie Krug's extra-point kick was good. With 2:17 left in the first period, Roth capped off a seven-play, 42-yard drive with a 14-yard TD run. Krug's kick was good again and the Broncos led 14-0 after one quarter.

At the 8:47 mark in the second period, Roth, who hadn't scored a rushing touchdown all season, finished off a six-play, 73-yard drive with his third TD of the night on the ground with a seven-yard run. The extra-point was good. Finally, with 4:52 remaining in the first half, Colby (2-4, 1-2 Class 3A District 6) got on the board with a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hunter Vaughn to running back Tyler Voss. The two-point conversion was no good and Russell led 21-6 at the half.

On the first play from scrimmage to begin the third quarter, Russell running back Jacob Windholz scampered 80 yards for a touchdown. Krug's extra-point kick was good. With 4:39 remaining in the third stanza, the Eagles scored again on a 12-yard TD pass from Vaughn to wide receiver Bryce Myers. The two-point conversion was good and the Broncos led 28-14 after three quarters.

Neither team scored in the final frame and Russell was able to hold on for the 28-14 victory.

Russell outgained Colby 385 total yards to 228 yards with all of Russell's yards coming on the ground. The Eagles finished with 82 yards rushing and 146 yards passing.

Windholz led Russell with 165 yards rushing on 16 carries. Fellow senior running back Jesse Whitmer followed with 124 yards rushing on 15 carries.

For Colby, Vaughn passed for 146 yards on 11 completions. Voss caught four passes for 71 yards and carried the ball 15 times for 38 yards.

Both teams committed two turnovers - an interception and a fumble for Russell and two INTs for Colby.
