Russell Scores Winter Sports Night Sweep
Girls: Russell 56, Trego 24

The Russell High School girls basketball team hosted Trego on Friday, February 9 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell on Winter Sports Night and won 56-24.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and led 30-16 at the half. Russell pulled away even more in the third period, led 47-19 after three and cruised to the upset victory over now 10-7 Trego.
Junior Kelvie Reeves led Russell with a career-high-tying 16 points followed by 12 points and six rebounds from senior Anna Thielen.
Senior Avery Ziegler paced the Lady Golden Eagles with nine points and eight boards.
The Lady Broncos outrebounded Trego 26 to 20 overall and 10 to 7 on the offensive glass.
The Lady Broncos also forced 22 Trego turnovers compared to 17 turnovers themselves.
The Russell girls improve to 5-12 overall and 2-5 in the Mid-Continent League.
Following the crowning of seniors Graham Dreiling and Anna Thielen as the RHS Winter Sports King and Queen, the Russell boys also scored a dominating win by defeating Trego 64-34.
The Broncos led 19-5 after the first period and 38-16 at the break. Russell held a 51-29 advantage after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth stanza to win by 30.
Junior Ayden Wagner and sophomore Jake Mooney paced the Broncos with 13 points each. Mooney also had seven rebounds. Sophomore Walker Middleton scored a career-high 12 points.
Senior Corbin Micek led the Golden Eagles with 10 points and seven boards.
Russell outrebounded Trego 28 to 22 overall and 11 to 4 on the offensive glass.
The Broncos also forced 22 Trego turnovers and only committed five.
The Russell boys improve to 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the MCL.
