Russell Splits Winter Sports Night with Goodland

Girls: Goodland 58, Russell 14
Boys: Russell 68, Goodland 61

The Russell High School girls basketball team hosted undefeated Class 3A top-ranked Goodland on Friday, January 27 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell and lost 58-14.

The Cowgirls led 17-3 after the first quarter, 46-5 at halftime, 54-13 after three periods, the fourth frame was played with a running clock and Goodland won 58-14.

Freshman Macy Patterson led Russell with five points. Junior Harlee Donovan scored four points.

Senior Talexa Weeter paced Goodland with 25 points followed by 13 points from senior Olivia Lehman.

Goodland outrebounded the Lady Broncos 22 to 11 overall and 13 to 2 on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls fall to 1-13 overall and remain 0-5 in league play.

The boys contest between Russell and Goodland on Friday was a tight and high-scoring game with the Broncos winning 68-61.

The Cowboys led 18-14 after one period, but Russell held a 30-28 advantage at intermission. Russell's largest lead of the ballgame came in the third stanza when the Broncos went ahead 42-32, but Goodland battled back and Russell led 46-41 heading into the final period. The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter and Russell was able to hold on for the 68-61 victory.

Senior Jordayn Buhrle led Russell with a career-high-tying 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jace Peerman followed with a career-high 17 points and five three-point buckets. Senior David Pummell had a career-high 15 points and 10 boards. And senior Jackson Cross scored 13 points.

Junior Manny Gonzalez paced the Cowboys with 12 points. Sophomores Linkon Cure and Brady Brumbaugh each scored 11 points. And junior Noah Shinette added 10 points.

Russell outrebounded Goodland 35 to 23 overall and 12 to 8 on the offensive boards.

The Broncos were also 10-of-13 at the free throw line.

The Russell boys improve to 9-6 overall and remain 3-2 in the league.

The Russell girls and boys get back into Mid-Continent League play on Tuesday, January 31 at Plainville. Tipoff for the girls game is set for 6 PM with the boys following at around 7:30 PM. Catch both games on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.

Friday night was also Winter Sports Night at RHS and Mileah Backhus and Charlie Krug were crowned Winter Sports Queen and King.
