Russell Suffers Senior Night Loss
The Russell High School football team hosted Minneapolis for senior night on Friday, October 18 and lost 35-15.
Minneapolis (3-4 overall, 1-3 North Central Activities Association, 1-2 Class 2A District 7) scored the first touchdown of the game at the 9:20 mark in the first quarter on a one-yard run by junior quarterback Owen Just. The extra-point kick was good by senior Hunter Milum. With 2:30 remaining in the first period, Just passed 51 yards to senior wide receiver Joseph Woehl for a TD. The PAT was good and the Lions led 14-0 after one frame.
At the 8:59 mark in the second stanza, Minneapolis junior running back Brayton Peters rushed one yard for a touchdown. The extra-point kick was good. Finally, with 5:37 remaining in the second quarter, Russell (2-5 overall, 1-4 Mid-Continent League, 0-3 Class 2A District 7) got on the board with a 19-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mason Rohr to junior wide receiver Walker Middleton that finished a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Junior kicker Alex Krug's PAT was good, but Minneapolis led 21-7 at the halftime break.
The Lions scored the only touchdown of the third period on a 36-yard pass from Just to senior wingback Zach Nelson. The extra-point kick was good and Minneapolis led 28-7 after three frames.
Peters rushed for another Minneapolis TD from 17 yards out with 2:40 to play in the game. The PAT was good. And with just 1:24 left, Russell's Middleton rushed eight yards for a touchdown. Rohr passed to Middleton for the two-point conversion, but the Broncos fell 35-15.
Minneapolis outgained Russell 390 total yards to 353. The Broncos finished with 147 yards rushing and 206 yards passing, compared to 224 yards on the ground and 166 yards through the air for the Lions.
Rohr passed for all 206 yards on 19 completions and one score for Russell. He also rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries. Junior wide receiver Dominick Hernandez caught five passes for 98 yards.
Peters led the Lions with 191 yards rushing on 25 carries and two scores.
The Broncos committed three turnovers - a lost fumble and two interceptions. The Lions had one fumble and one interception.
