Russell's Kinsey Zorn won the state championship in the 800-meter dash and set a new school record that was in her family for over three decades on Day 2 of the Kansas High School State Track and Field Meet at Cessna Stadium in Wichita on Saturday.

Zorn, who won the 135-pound state championship in wrestling back in February in Class 3-2-1A, sprinted to the crown in 3A in a school record time of 2:19.92, which broke the old record set by her mother Micky (Johnson) Zorn when she ran track for the Lady Broncos in the early 90's. Zorn is also the first state champion for the RHS Track and Field program since Brayden Strobel captured the boys high jump title in 2023.

Zorn added to her medal haul earlier Saturday with a seventh place finish in the 400-meter dash.

In other Saturday results, the girls 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Averie Counts, Jaden Ney, Annika Nichols and Zorn finished ninth, just missing out on a medal.  Freshman Teagan Kuntzsch, the lone Russell boys state qualifier, competed in the high jump, but did not place.

The Lady Broncos placed 20th as a team with 14.5 points. Beloit rolled to the girls Class 3A team title with 74 points while Holcomb won the boys title with 84 points.

Area athletes also took part at the track meet. Sylvan-Lucas' Vance Dohl placed third in the 2A boys high jump with a personal best jump of 6'4". Codie Huehl was seventh in the 2A girls 400-meter dash and 11th in the girls 800-meter dash. For Victoria, freshman Nick Sander competed in the 1A boys high jump and just missed placing. Emma Dinkel placed seventh in the 1A girls long jump and finished ninth in the 1A girls triple jump.
