Sylvan-Lucas Boys Run into Canton-Galva in Sub-State Semifinal

The Sylvan-Lucas boys basketball team had its season come to an end on Friday, March 3, losing to Canton-Galva 64-52 in the semifinals of the Goessel Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State.

The Mustangs held early 2-0, 3-2 and 5-4 leads only to see Canton-Galva go up 11-10 at the end of one quarter. After falling behind 17-12 early in the second quarter, Sylvan-Lucas came back with an 8-2 run to go up 20-19 midway through the second period. But the Eagles closed the half on a 10-2 surge to lead 29-22 at halftime.

Each team posted 20 third quarter points with Canton-Galva on top 49-42 heading to the fourth quarter. The Eagles stretched their lead to 13 early in the final quarter and never let Sylvan-Lucas closer than nine the rest of the way.

Valden Dohl led Sylvan-Lucas with 17 points in his final game. Lane Homewood followed with 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Matthew Lawson had 14 points.

Canton-Galva was led by Jeff Vincent with 29 points.

The Mustangs finish the winter with a 15-7 record.

Canton-Galva improves to 16-6 and will take on Elyria Christian in Saturday evening's sub-state championship game at 7 PM. The Eagles cruised by Goessel 57-28 in the semifinals on Friday.
