Sylvan-Lucas Girls Advance to Sub-State Championship Game

The Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School girls basketball team defeated Rural Vista 54-47 in the Goessel Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State Semifinals in Goessel on Thursday, March 2.

The Lady Heat of Rural Vista started hot and led 13-10 after one quarter, but the Lady Mustangs battled back and led 30-27 at intermission. Sylvan-Lucas extended its lead to 45-38 after three periods. Rural Vista started the fourth stanza on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 45, but the Lady Mustangs hit free throws down the stretch to pull ahead and win 54-47.

Senior Keeli Knobbe led two-seed Sylvan-Lucas with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Emma Finkenbinder and sophomore Maggie Labertew each scored eight points.

Juniors Bailey Rapp and Angie Linder paced three-seed Rural Vista with 15 points each.

The Lady Mustangs outrebounded Rural Vista 29 to 25 overall and 15 to 7 on the offensive glass.

Sylvan-Lucas committed only eight turnovers compared to Rural Vista's 20.

The Lady Mustangs were 19-of-27 from the free throw line and the Lady Heat were 11-of-18.

The Sylvan-Lucas girls improve to 16-6 overall and remain 9-3 in the Northern Plains League.

With Thursday's win, the Lady Mustangs advance to the Goessel Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State Championship game on Saturday, March 4 at 5:30 PM in Goessel. The Sylvan-Lucas girls will face four-seed Canton-Galva in the title game. The Canton-Galva girls upset top-seed Elyria Christian 51-38 on Thursday in Goessel.
