Sylvan-Lucas Girls Upset in Sub-State Championship Game
The Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School girls basketball team lost 52-39 to Canton-Galva in the Goessel Class 1A Division 1 Sub-State Championship game on Saturday, March 4 in Goessel.
The four-seed Lady Eagles upset top seed Elyria Christian on Thursday by a final score of 51-38 and followed that with Saturday's upset of the second-seeded Lady Mustangs.
Canton-Galva jumped out to an 18-5 lead after the first quarter Saturday night and led 26-16 at the break. The Lady Eagles led 39-27 after three frames. Sylvan-Lucas pulled to within seven points of the Lady Eagles in the fourth period, but Canton-Galva held the Lady Mustangs off with free throws down the stretch in a foul heavy contest.
Sophomore Maggie Labertew led Sylvan-Lucas with 16 points and four three-point buckets. Junior Emma Cline followed with seven points.
Senior Lili Espinoza paced Canton-Galva with 15 points followed by 13 points from freshman Trinity Espinoza and 11 points from senior Brecken Pearson.
The Lady Eagles outrebounded Sylvan-Lucas 28 to 23 overall and 13 to 9 on the offensive glass.
Sylvan-Lucas committed 27 turnovers compared to 17 for Canton-Galva.
The Lady Mustangs were 12-of-33 from the free throw line while Canton-Galva was 29-of-46.
The Sylvan-Lucas girls finish the season with a 16-7 overall record. They were 9-3 in the Northern Plains League.
The 15-8 Canton-Galva Lady Eagles move on to the Class 1A Division 1 State Tournament next week in Dodge City.
The Elyria Christian boys defeated Canton-Galva 49-45 in the boys Sub-State Championship game Saturday night in Goessel.
