Sylvan-Lucas Handed First Loss by Clifton-Clyde
SYLVAN GROVE-Jack Skocny accounted for 230 yards of offense and three total touchdowns as the Clifton-Clyde Eagles took down Sylvan-Lucas 32-6 in 8-Man Division l District 4 action Friday evening at Weatherman Field.
The first quarter was a defensive battle as the first three series between the two teams ended in punts. On its second drive, Sylvan-Lucas appeared to start taking control by running the Football but the drive stalled on the Clifton-Clyde six-yard line where the Mustangs faced a fourth and goal. Connor Charvat appeared to catch a touchdown pass, but officials ruled he trapped the ball and the Eagles gained possession via the turnover on downs.
Clifton-Clyde needed just two plays to get on the scoreboard when Skocny connected with Joseph Fahey on a 63-yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion gave the Eagles an 8-0 lead 1:40 into the second period. After Sylvan-Lucas went three and out on its next series, Skocny returned the ensuing Mustang punt to the Sylvan-Lucas five-yard line and ran in for a touchdown from one yard out on third and goal to make the score 16-0 with 7:25 remaining before halftime after the successful two-point play.
More points came the Eagles way just 21 seconds later when the Clifton-Clyde defense sacked Sylvan-Lucas Quarterback Carter Johnson in the end zone to swell the lead to 18-0 which was the halftime score.
After a fumble ended one drive, Sylvan-Lucas found paydirt on its next possession when Charvat caught a 10-yard pass from Johnson on fourth and goal but the conversion failed, leaving the score 16-6 in favor of Clifton-Clyde. The Eagles then responded to the Mustang tally with a score of their own as they marched 60 yards in 10 plays with Trextin Koch scoring on a 14-yard run up the far sideline on a fourth and two. The conversion failed but Clifton-Clyde held a 24-6 advantage after three quarters.
Skocny helped the Eagles put the game away with 3:30 left in the game when he took off on a 45-yard run and the two-point conversion provided the final margin of 32-6.
Clifton Clyde (4-2, 3-0) outgained Sylvan-Lucas 266-239 with Skocny accounting for the lion's share of that total. He rushed for 130 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns while passing for 105 yards and a score.
Zayne Maupin led Sylvan-Lucas (5-1, 2-1) with 49 yards rushing and 85 yards receiving. The Mustangs were also plagued by two fumbles on their way to their first loss of the season.
Clifton-Clyde will return home for their Senior Night on Friday, October 18 to face Rock Hills while Sylvan-Lucas will host their Senior Night against county-rival Lincoln which was a 52-6 winner over Lakeside on Friday night to remain undefeated in district play.
