SYLVAN GROVE-Quarterback Lane Homewood rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns as the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs broke open a close game in the second half on their way to a 42-16 victory over Otis-Bison Friday night at Weatherman Field.

The Mustangs had a golden opportunity to start the game when Otis-Bison let the opening kickoff roll by them and Sylvan-Lucas recovered the ball on the Cougar 20-yard line.  However, the scoring opportunity was snuffed out when the Mustangs were stopped on fourth and goal at the one-yard line.

After stopping the Cougars three and out on their first possession, Sylvan-Lucas got the ball back and went to work by crafting a 10-play-47- yard drive that culminated in a one-yard run by Homewood and a 6-0 advantage after the missed conversion.  Early in the second quarter, Otis-Bison took what proved to be their only lead of the game on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kaden Foust to Eston Juno and the conversion was good allowing the Cougars to own an 8-6 advantage.

The lead lasted all of 45 seconds as Sylvan-Lucas responded with a five-yard run for a score by Homewood that was set up by a 50-yard scamper a few plays earlier.  The Mustangs missed the conversion again and led 12-8.  Sylvan-Lucas widened the lead with 1:25 left in the second quarter when Homewood completed his only pass of the game in four attempts when he connected with Valden Dohl for a 13-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion was successful to give the Mustangs a 20-8 cushion.

The Cougars responded one more time with an eight-play, 45-yard drive capped off with 12 seconds remaining before intermission when Foust found Dalton Regan from 11 yards out and with the successful two-point play, Otis-Bison cut the margin to 20-16 at halftime.

Sylvan-Lucas then chewed up five minutes and 36 seconds on their opening possession of the second half and drove 51 yards in 11 plays  with Alex Hernandez scoring from nine yards out to swell the Mustang advantage to 28-16.  Later in the third quarter after an Otis-Bison punt that went into the end zone for a touchback, running back Geriun Boor broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run and the conversion was successful giving the Mustangs a 36-16 lead after three quarters.

Homewood then ripped off a 46-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter to provide the final margin of 42-16 as the Mustangs prevailed in their District 5 opener.

The Sylvan-Lucas defense stiffened in the second half, stopping two Otis-Bison drives inside the five yard line during the final period.

Joining Homewood as a 100-yard rusher was Boor who ran for 102 yards.  Sylvan-Lucas rushed for 393 yards and amassed 406 total yards while holding Otis-Bison 201 yards.

Sylvan-Lucas (1-1, 1-0) will be on the road for the first time this season next Friday, September 17 when they travel to Chase for a 7 p.m. contest.
