WILSON-Jonah Huehl scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs pull away for a 55-39 win over Wilson on Thursday evening in Northern Plains League action at Wilson Junior-Senior High School.  The Sylvan-Lucas Girls won the earlier contest 54-13. The games were originally scheduled for Friday night but were moved up 24 hours to avoid any potential weather-related problems.

The Lady Mustangs took control of their game early and never looked back, scoring the game's first 11 points on the way to an 11-2 advantage after the first quarter.  The lead grew to 29-2 at intermission as Wilson was held without a field goal for the entire first half.  From there, Sylvan-Lucas cruised to its fourth win in their last five games as they beat their arch-rivals for the third year in a row in the regular season series.  Cadence Nondorf led the Lady Mustangs (11-3, 7-1 NPL) with 15 points while the leading scorer for Wilson (4-7, 3-4 NPL) was Cara Criswell with seven.

In the Boys game, Camryn Eberhart opened the scoring with a basket for Wilson that gave the Dragons their only lead of the night.  Sylvan-Lucas then took a 6-2 lead on three baskets in a row by Huehl before Wilson re-tied the score 6-6.  The score was tied again at 8 apiece before the Mustangs closed out the quarter with a 9-0 surge to lead 17-8.

Sylvan-Lucas stretched its second quarter lead to as much as 26-12 before Wilson closed the gap to 28-18 at halftime on the strength of a 6-2 run to end the half.  After the Mustangs bolted out to another 14-point lead in the third quarter, the Dragons responded with another six-point run to pull to within 34-26 late in the third quarter.  A chance to cut further into the deficit was stymied by two missed free throws and then Sylvan-Lucas scored three points to finish out the quarter and lead 37-26.  In the fourth quarter, Huehl who hadn't had a field goal since the first quarter, took over the game with eight points including two key layups to help the Mustangs pull away and bring an end to Wilson's five-game winning streak.

Huehl led Sylvan-Lucas (12-3, 7-1 NPL), ranked #8 in this week's Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A Division l Boys poll with 17 points.  Eberhart paced Wilson (7-4, 4-2 NPL) with 18 points to lead all scorers.  The Dragons were playing just their second game since January 15 after the team was quarantined for an extended time due to COVID-related protocols.

Thursday was also Winter Sports Night at Wilson.  Bryna Hill was named Queen, while Garrett Thielen was named King.

Wilson was scheduled to host Rock Hills on Monday, February 15 but due to weather-related concerns, that doubleheader has been moved to Thursday, February 18 and the Dragons are next scheduled to play on Tuesday, February 16 at home against Lakeside.  Sylvan-Lucas is also next scheduled to be in action on February 16 when they host Osborne.
