HAYS-Brooke Koenigsman scored 11 of her game-high 31 points in third quarter as the TMP-Marian Lady Monarchs rallied in the second half to defeat Russell 49-36 Tuesday evening in Mid-Continent League action at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

The game was even throughout the first half as the teams were tied 11-11 after one quarter and 22-22 at halftime.  The Lady Broncos on the strength of five points by Anna Thielend took a 29-24 lead midway through the third period before Koenigsman heated up and singlehandedly led an 11-0 TMP-Marian run to close the quarter and give the Lady Monarchs a 35-29 advantage.

The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter as Koenigsman scored 11 more points to help TMP-Marian (9-9, 5-2 MCL) pull away for the 13-point victory.

Thielen led Russell (4-12, 1-5 MCL) with 15 points while Taylor Birney added 12 points.  Russell outrebounded  TMP-Marian 22-21 and offensive rebounds were even at six apiece.  The two teams also combined for 42 turnovers.

In the Boys game, Russell held a slim halftime lead but slow starts in both halves were the Broncos' undoing as TMP-Marian hung on for a 38-35 win.

The Monarchs bolted out to an 8-0 lead to start the game and held a 13-4 advantage after the opening eight minutes.  A three-pointer by Joey Mindrup widened TMP-Marian's lead to 16-4 before Russell closed the half on a 14-1 run capped off by a three-point basket from Ayden Wagner to lead 18-17 at intermission.

The Monarchs opened the third quarter with another 8-0 run to lead 25-18 before the Broncos closed the gap to 26-25 heading to the fourth quarter.  Cold shooting hurt the Broncos down the stretch as TMP-Marian was able to score some key baskets including back-to-back layups in the final 30 seconds to hang on for the win.

Ty Schmeidler led TMP-Marian (8-10, 6-1 MCL) with eight points.  Dominick Hernandez led all scorers for Russell (5-12, 1-5 MCL) with 10 points while Ian Strobel pulled down 10 rebounds.

Russell lost the game despite outrebounding TMP-Marian 27-17 and 9-4 on the offensive glass.
