Track and Field: RHS Girls 4th, Boys 6th at MCL Meet

The 2024 Mid-Continent League Track and Field meet was held on Thursday at Russell High School's Shaffer Field with 11 schools taking part.

The Russell Lady Broncos finished in fourth place with 65 points while the RHS Boys turned in a sixth place finish with a score of 38 points.  Norton captured the Girls title by 11 and a half points over second place Ellis while Hoxie's Boys were triumphant by 21 points over second place Plainville.

Highlights for the Russell Girls during the Field Events included Aubrey Birney finishing fourth in the High Jump and second in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, Jaden Ney placing second in the Pole Vault and Macy Patterson finishing sixth in the Shot Put.

In the running events the highlight of the day was a new school record set by the 4x800-meter relay team of Kisney Zorn, Ney, Anna Thielen and Kelvie Reeves who finished second in the event.  The record run in a time of 10:02.80 beat by nearly 10 seconds the previous record set in 1990 by a team that included Zorn's mother, Micky Johnson Zorn. The four runners also placed second in the 4x400-meter relay.

Jasmine Jefferson was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, Taylor Birney placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, Thielen placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run, Taylor Birney, Ney, Jefferson and Reeves were fifth in the 4x100-meter relay and Zorn placed second in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run.

On the Boys side, Thomas Pummell captured first place in the High Jump and placed sixth in the Triple Jump, Waker Middleton placed third in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, Trey Zorn was third in the 1,600-meter run and 800-meter run, while Middelton, Brody Pfannenstiel, Seth Schneider and Camden Backhus teamed up for a fifth place finish in the 4x100-meter relay.

The Track and Field teams now turn their attention to the Class 3A Regional meet on Thursday, May 16 in Beloit with hopes of qualifying for the Class 3A State Track and Field Meet later this month at Wichita State University.
