Trego Sweeps Russell on Winter Sports Night

Russell continued Mid-Continent League play on Friday, February 12 at home against WaKeeney-Trego at Amos Morris Gym.

Trego won the girls game 61-49 and took the boys contest 49-46.

In the girls game, Russell had a strong bid going to upset the seventh-ranked team in Class 2A. The Lady Broncos jumped out to an 18-8 lead after one quarter, led 33-28 at halftime and 43-36 after three quarters. Russell was up 46-38 with about six minutes remaining before Lili Shubert took over. The Trego senior, who averages 20 points a game and earned all-state honors a year ago in 2A, scored 17 of her game-high 35 points in the final quarter to spark a 23-3 run to end the game and lead the Lady Eagles to their sixth-straight win.

Aniya Stierlen had 19 points and seven rebounds to pace Russell. Emerson Nichols followed with seven points and Renee Nichol six.

The Lady Broncos fall to 7-9 overall and 3-5 in the MCL. Trego improves to 14-3 and 8-1 in league play.

The boys game featured seven lead changes and two ties with neither team building a lead larger than eight. Trego led 13-11 after one quarter and 27-19 at halftime. Russell outscored the Golden Eagles 18-9 in the third quarter and led 37-36. Trego went up 41-39 midway through the fourth quarter and then used a combination of Charlie Russell and solid defense to hold off the Broncos. Russell scored 10 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, including Trego's final eight points, and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Jordayn Buhrle led the Broncos with 10 points. Jackson Cross scored seven.  Briar Ulrich and Jace Peerman each had six points.

Russell drops to 6-10 and 2-6 in the MCL. Trego improves to 12-5 and 6-3 in league play.

Russell steps out of Mid-Continent League play on Tuesday, February 16 with a trip to LaCrosse. Game time for the girls is at 6 PM with the boys to follow around 7:45 PM. Catch both games on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and streaming on KRSL.com.
