Victoria Claims Regional Championship with Win Over Wallace County
The Victoria High School football team claimed an 8-Man Division II Regional Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 54-0 win at home over Wallace County.
The second-ranked Knights are now 10-0 and have shutout their opponents in four consecutive games and six total games this season.
Victoria sophomore fullback Weston Scherrer rushed for four touchdowns in the first quarter from 22 yards out, 26 yards out, 17 yards out and 17 yards out, each closing out three-play scoring drives of 54 yards, 26 yards, 37 yards and 31 yards, and the Knights led 30-0 after the first period as they were three-of-four on two-point conversion attempts.
Early in the second frame, Victoria junior nose guard Kyle Huser scored a safety. Senior defensive end Jeb Miller followed with a 51-yard interception return for a touchdown with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. At the 7:20 mark in the second stanza, Victoria junior tailback Wyatt Schmidtberger rushed nine yards for a TD to finish a four-play, 41-yard drive. And the final score of the half and the game came with 5:45 remaining in the second quarter when Victoria senior defensive back Wyatt Griffin scored a touchdown on a 24-yard interception return. The Knights were two-of-three on two-point conversion attempts in the second period and the game was called at halftime due to the mercy rule with Victoria cruising to the 54-0 victory.
Victoria outgained the Wildcats 195 total yards to negative five yards. The Knights finished with 160 yards rushing and 35 yards passing compared to minus 14 yards on the ground and nine yards through the air for Wallace County.
Scherrer led Victoria with 121 yards rushing on six carries and four scores.
Wallace County ends its season with an overall record of 5-4.
Having won a Regional Championship, Victoria will next host 9-1 Hutchinson-Central Christian in the Sectional Round, or Quarterfinals, of the 8-Man Division II playoffs on Friday, November 15 at 6 PM in Victoria.
