Smoky Hills PBS is thrilled to unveil the 2024 PBS KIDS Writers Contest winners. SHPBS saw an outpouring of creativity from children across central and western Kansas.

Open to children in first through fifth grade, the contest received captivating stories that showcased the unique voice and creativity of its author. To read the winning stories and view the Young Writers and Illustrators Award Show, visit SmokyHillsPBS.org.

First Grade winners were first place Happy Love by Madelyn Crisp of Osborne, second place The Lost Animals by Maverick Nicholson of Osborne and third place Daisy's Flower by Mila LeSage of Lincoln Elementary in Hays.

Second Grade winners were first place The Missing Horse Named Winner by Karlie Gasper of Osborne, second place An Adventure with Friends by Owen Mai of Russell and third place Wonderful Places by Everly Reimer of Meade.

Third Grade winners were first place Space Explorer by Lincoln Kelly of Otis-Bison Elementary and Timken, second place Dad's Birthday Weekend at Wilson Lake by Noah Fanshier of St. John-Hudson and third place Detective Peaches by Zoey Funk of Otis-Bison Elementary and Olmitz.

Fourth Grade winners were first place The Story of Lexi by Madison Mawhitter of St. John-Hudson, second place The Queen of Space by Clara Yust of Harvest Christian School in Ulysses and third place Hallie and Pablo by Hallie Bonner of St. John-Hudson and Stafford.

And Fifth Grade winners were first place The Homeless Puppy by Andelyn Reimer of Meade, second place Little Owl's Shiny  Gem by Gannon Klein of Jefferson Elementary in Great Bend and third place The Mountain by Daisy Scott of Jefferson Elementary in Great Bend.

Smoky Hills PBS extends its heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their creativity and dedication to storytelling. They also want to thank the teachers who incorporate this fun contest in their classrooms. The 2024 PBS KIDS Writers Contest emphasizes Smoky Hills PBS' ongoing commitment to fostering literacy and creativity in children across the communities they serve.
