Russell's Ney Wins State Title, Pfeifer Places Second, Donner and Suchy Third
Russell's Jaden Ney captured the 145-pound Class 4-1A Girls State Wrestling Championship on Saturday night at Tony's Pizza Event Center in Salina to complete a perfect 38-0 season.
Ney defeated Hailee Crosland of Santa Fe Trail in a 4-1 decision to claim the crown after finishing second last season at 135 pounds. Ney was one of four wrestlers from the Bronco wrestling program to medal at state. Three members of the Russell and Sylvan-Lucas boys wrestling team earned top three finishes in Class 3-2-1A. Teagen Pfeifer placed second at 165 pounds, while Xzephren Donner was third at 106 and Brayden Suchy was third at 175.
Ney becomes the first Russell High School wrestler to win a state championship since Alan Dolezal in 1968.
As a team, the Russell boys finished sixth with 65.5 points. Hoxie won the team title with 169.5 points, defeating second-place Norton by 52.5 points and captured their fourth-consecutive championship. The Lady Broncos placed 24th with 28 points. Rossville won a tight three-way race to claim the team championship. Rossville had 82.5 points while second place Oakley scored 82 points and Chanute finished third with 80 points.
